Sergei Ashtanov, an overweight young man living with his mother, runs a video blog that is his favorite way of interacting with the world. In it, he praises Russia, the Orthodox Church, and Vladimir Putin, but he also gives advice in matters of life, love, and cooking; he dances, he strips – he shares the most intimate details of his life. From these blogs emerges a truly schizophrenic image of modern Russia. No Place for Fools was made by Oleg Mavromatti, a Russian dissident and artist living in Bulgaria, based on materials he had found online. It is hard to say what we are truly dealing with here: a visual essay, a documentary, or a mockumentary? Whatever the answer, this is a highly original work. It can enchant or repulse, but it will definitely not leave its viewer indifferent.
Film with English subtitles.
